In-Store Rentals


RENTALS:

At this time all rentals are for in-store pickup only.

 

Please note that, because textbook information can change at any time (due to faculty changes, publisher substitutions, cancelled classes, etc.), we are not responsible for information used from this site, or information obtained from any Store employee, for purchase of textbooks from other sources. Students purchasing materials from the Herkimer College Bookstore are protected under our returns policies

 

1. How do I return my books?
Easy. Books are returned to the cashier at the buyback window in the exact same way you'd return or sell back a purchased textbook, just be clear that it is a rental return. The cashier will then clear your account and you will receive a receipt.

2. What if I drop my class or change my mind and need to return my rented book early?
No problem. Returns on rentals follow a concurrent return policy with book purchases.
Refunds will be given according to the following conditions:
                A valid cash register receipt is presented.
                Books are in original condition; unopened and unmarked and undamaged.
                Shrink-wrapped, boxed texts, software or packages must not be opened.

You return the book by the book return deadline.  (Spring 2017: May 19th, 2017)

3. Can I write or highlight in my rented book?
Yes, but keep it reasonable. Minimal highlighting and writing is accepted as long as text on pages is not compromised for future use. Books must be returned in good condition, suitable for the next student to purchase or rent.  Access codes that may come with your book can be used, just the text itself will need to be returned.

Acceptable return condition includes but not limited to:

               No liquid damage (wavy, swollen or discolored, crinkled, stains, rings),

               No broken spine or binding,

               Cover is not torn or taped,

               No missing, torn, or loose pages,

               No burns, fire, or smoke damage,

               No strong odor of any kind (including musty odor, cigar or cigarette odor),

               No excessive writing or highlighting

 
4. What if my rented book gets damaged or lost?
If your book gets damaged beyond reasonable use, lost, or stolen, your options are as follows:
Either:
Pay the difference between the rental price and the purchase price of the textbook, plus an administrative fee of 10% of the retail cost. (i.e. if you rented the book for $50, and the retail was $95, you would pay an additional $54 to the rental company, this must be done at the Bookstore.)
OR
You can acquire a replacement copy in as good or better condition to turn in to the bookstore as a replacement to the lost or damaged book.

5. Can I use student aid to rent my books?
Credit Cards are the customary form of payment at the kiosk. However, our store participates in the payment options method.  Alternate forms of payment: cash, credit card, financial aid, and college cash can now be utilized to rent books.  A valid credit card will be required as a guarantor for every transaction regardless of payment type.


6. What if I cannot return my book by the deadline?
There is a grace period of 7 days after the deadline.  At the end of that time the credit card that you entered as the guarantor will be charged the retail cost of the book minus the rental fee that you already paid, Plus a non-return fee of 25% of the retail value.  You will be charged regardless of whether you still have possession of the book, or if you failed to indicate that you rented the book and participated in the store's buyback program.
